Safe Shopping

Safe Shopping is a tool we are designing to help protect people from online shopping scams. From fake chatbot reviews to phony images - we want to make sure the scammers don’t win.

We did some research

Before starting the concept and ideation stage with product managers, I worked with the user researcher to get some early feedback from users. We wanted to gauge their paint points and common assumptions about online scam products.

  • We found that users see scams more from whether a product was delivered or not and if it actually has real, high quality reviews. Many of the users we interviewed didn’t even think about fake AI-generated imagery.

  • Surprisingly many of the people we interviewed listed popular sites like Amazon and Walmart as high areas of scams. These are considered safe brands that are supposed to have a tight security algorithm, but it proves to us that no site - however established - is immune to online scams.

  • Some of the biggest fears shoppers have include breached of payment information, lack of warranty guarantee on products, and of course products that don’t get shipped out.

Working with concepts

As the main designer leading this initiative with the AI product manager, I went through many concepts, wireframes, and eventually higher fidelity screens. We experimented everything from information hierarchy to color palettes that would most resonate with the scam detection messaging.

The user flow as of now

Currently we have a user journey which we have defined through several key touch points. The idea is to have users discover the feature from their dashboard and download Safe Shopping as a separate extension through the Chrome store.

We also want to make the post onboarding set up very simple. Our goal is to make it feel like any other extension and seamlessly fit into the user’s everyday online shopping routine.

Since the experience is a first for users, we are designing a coach mark UI guide that will give users a quick overview of how the feature works.

Final Takeaway

This is currently an ongoing project that we are planning to launch in the next 2 months. An exciting part of this project is that we are currently in the works to partner with several major brands to help provide a more immersive browsing experience.
